"Fear Not! Peace Be With You"
|
It was cold, gray and windy outside, but inside St.
John The Baptist Episcopal Church in Lodi the
message to over 400 attendees was one of love,
resurrection and reconciliation. The Diocesan
Convention was called to order after morning prayer,
its main business to reconstruct the Diocese of San
Joaquin. Business proceeded rapidly with motions
passing unanimously, including the resolution
appointing Bishop Jerry Lamb as our provisional
Bishop. A new standing committee and diocesan
council were elected.
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori received a
standing ovation after she spoke with warmth and
hope of the resurrection of this diocese. She began
with the powerful works "Fear not, peace be with
you," and described how appropriate it was that the
convention was being held in the Easter season. Her
message was "Jesus is Lord." No hierarchy, no
official is God. We belong to God and in Jesus we
find God. She spoke of the diversity of Jesus'
followers and the difficulty they had accepting that
diversity and the challenge that we have in
remembering that we are all in God's image. Her full
speech can be found on Episcopal Life online.
