Schedule of Worship for Holy Week 2011

Palm/Passion Sunday, April 17
8:30 a.m. Palms and Holy Eucharist
10:30 a.m. Procession of the Palms and Holy Eucharist
(begins at Lower Sacramento Road)

Maundy Thursday, April 21
7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday Liturgy
We remember Jesus’ last meal with his friends before his death. John’s Gospel describes Jesus
washing his disciples’ feet on this occasion. The foot washing ceremony is offered at this liturgy for
those who would like to participate. We celebrate Christ’s continuing presence with us in shared bread
and wine. After the Eucharist, we perform the dramatic stripping of the Altar and Sanctuary,
symbolizing the emptiness we would experience without Christ in our lives.
9:00 p.m. Prayer Vigil (until noon on Good Friday)
A vigil will be held in the “garden” at the back of the church. Sign up on the Ministry Table to spend a
vigil hour in our garden.

Good Friday, April 22
12:00 p.m. Good Friday Solemn Liturgy with Devotions at the Cross
6:00 p.m. The Way of the Cross for Children and Those Who Love Them
Were you there? This service for children and those who love them is an informal, tactile mini‐
pilgrimage, beginning outside (weather permitting) and ending in the Chapel.

Holy Saturday, April 23
7:30 p.m. The Great Vigil of Easter and Festal Holy Eucharist (incense)
One of the most ancient of Christian liturgies, the Great Vigil of Easter has been called “the most
moving worship experience of the Church.” From the small bonfire on the pavement west of the
church, we light the Paschal Candle, which is our light in the darkness. By candlelight we process into
the darkened “tomb” of the Nave and hear the covenant stories of God claiming his people. With the
proclamation of Christ’s resurrection, all our lights will come on and the music will begin as we all
wildly ring our hand bells. We celebrate the resurrection of Christ as we share the first Eucharist of
Easter.

Easter – The Day of Resurrection, Sunday, April 24
8:30 a.m. Choral Holy Eucharist
10:30 a.m. Festive Holy Eucharist (incense)
12:00 p.m. Unveiling of Alleluia Banner and Children’s Easter Egg Hunt
Two festival celebrations will be offered on Easter Day. Join us for a continental breakfast between
liturgies. The children’s annual Easter Egg Hunt will begin after the 10:30 a.m. liturgy.
